Whole30’s dietary reset program has been a cornerstone for health and wellness since 2009 when CEO and co-founder Melissa Urban first blogged about a 30-day dietary experiment. The six-time New York Times best-seller wrote about a solution that helped emotional, habitual, and health-related issues with food, but Whole30 faced criticism for excluding plant-based dieters and vegans. But now, the renowned wellness brand just launched its inaugural plant-based rendition of the Whole 30 diet.

The nutritional reset diet traditionally included several animal-based proteins, leaving plant-based consumers wondering how to make the Whole30 possible without meat. The new Plant-Based Whole30 will be the companies first structured whole food plant-based elimination and reintroduction program. The new protocol will prioritize plant-based protein over conventional animal-based protein. The new dietary reset program prioritizes metabolic health and sustainable foods.

“We have always supported the vegan and vegetarian members of our community with resources and guides, but the new Plant-Based Whole30 is our most comprehensive offering to a new subset of people who could not join the Original Whole30 because of their personal beliefs or dietary preferences,”  Urban said. “I’m proud that we now offer programs to reach more people who want a life-changing reset to help get them on the right path and ultimately create an individualized diet to work best within their unique context and values.”

Urban aims to invite plant-based consumers to try the previously inaccessible diet. The program is structured around Non-Scale Victories that prioritize a better relationship to food rather than solely focusing on weight loss. Similar to plant-based diets, Whole30 intends to create healthier habits surrounding eating, promoting foods that help rather than harm the body.

The diet directs participants away from added sugars, excess grains, alcohol, and now, animal fats and proteins. The 30-day elimination phase will prioritize plant-based protein powders, nuts, legumes, and less-processed soy to supplement the animal-based protein. Following the elimination stage, the Plant-Based Whole30 will direct participants to introduce food groups one at a time to properly assess how their body reacts to them. Whole30 will offer an exclusively plant-based and animal-based option for reintegration.

“Although a vegan diet includes an abundant source of fruits and vegetables, it does not necessarily exclude processed foods, sugar or gluten,” FACN and Board-Certified Neurologist David Perlmutter, MD said. “The Plant-Based Whole30 program combines the health benefits of plant-based diets with the time-tested effectiveness of the Whole30 program, providing us with an even better opportunity to achieve our goals as we chart our health destiny.”

The new Whole30 program will follow the original structure of the famous dietary reset program, but Urban worked with registered dietician Stephanie Greunke to ensure that people receive enough protein. Urban notes that the biggest concern she hears from people regards protein consumption. The new Whole30 diet is endorsed by a team of medical and nutritional advisors, ensuring that participants will receive the proper nutritional value from the innovated Plant-Based Whole30.
