Graffiti Summer kicks off, with a celebration of cars, classic rock and Modesto native George Lucas’ film “American Graffiti.” There are celebrations throughout June, but below are just the events planned from June 4 to June 10.

Also planned is a concert by John McCutcheon, a new production from Sierra Repertory Theatre, the return of MoBand and burlesque show at the State Theatre.

Graffiti Summer parade

Among the centerpieces of Graffiti Summer is the American Graffiti Festival Parade, presented by the Kiwanis Club of North Modesto. The parade hosts up to 1,000 classic cars, recreating the tradition of cruising celebrated in the film “American Graffiti.”

Graffiti Museum

Graffiti Summer kicks off at the Graffiti USA Museum with an open house featuring historic exhibits and a drive-through chicken dinner fundraiser. Visitors can take a walking tour, see the plans to complete the museum and visit the store for souvenirs.

“American Graffiti”

The State Theatre shows “American Graffiti,” Modesto native George Lucas’ 1973 film chronicling a night of teenage cruising in his hometown.

Graffiti Classic

The Modesto Area Street Rod Association’s car show returns with more than 500 classics, hot rods and special interest cars to view. This year there will be a designated area only for Mustangs, the Mustang Corral.

Mid-Valley Chevy Club returns to celebrate Graffiti Summer with its Park-N-Shine shows. There will be two locations for the events this year.

Walk of Fame

“American Graffiti” actress Mackenzie Phillips will appear at the Legends of the Cruise Walk of Fame Celebration. Phillips is among this year’s inductees, along with Modesto City Councilwoman Jenny Kenoyer, Ron Pippin, Bob Rose, Vern Silva, Dan Vierra and the Deacons Car Club. There will be a car show during the event and live music following.

The Modesto Band of Stanislaus County, known as MoBand, kicks off its 2022 season with a Graffiti Summer celebration of classic rock. People are encouraged to spread out their blankets on the lawn and take picnic dinners.

John McCutcheon

Grammy-nominated folk musician John McCutcheon performs his 19th benefit concert for the Modesto Peace/Life Center. His latest album is “Bucket List” and his new album “Leap” will come out later this summer.

“Little Mermaid”

Sierra Repertory Theatre presents “Disney’s The Little Mermaid” in Columbia. The musical is the tale of mermaids, sea witches and singing sea life. Ariel, wants to pursue the human Prince Eric bargaining with the evil sea witch. But the bargain is not what it seems.

Heart tribute

Heart tribute band Heartless opens this season’s Red Tie Arts concert series, bringing the band’s classic hits to Ripon. There also will be an optional dinner, wine tasting and desserts.

Glitter Coven

The State Theatre presents “Glitter Coven: Queer — A Burlesque Pride Celebration.” The show is a fundraiser for MoPride. Prior to the show there will be booths with LBGTQ+ information and resources.
